Description: In this listing we are are offering a very interesting & well detailed 19th century swan which is made either of zinc or of heavy tin. We do not know what the specific purpose was that this swan was made for. We have been trying to figure out exactly what this is and we are hoping that someone out there in eBayland might be able to identify it. This may possibly have been an architectural element which was attached to something with a roundish shape with the nut under the swan. Also, it reminds us a bit of some of the painted tin swans that swim around in the moats under castle arches on some of the early German painted tin toys. However, the swan we are offering is far more detailed than any of those which we have ever seen. Also, this swan is far, far larger than any swans we have seen on that type of toy. Additionally, the swan we are offering is made either of zinc or of a much heavier gauge of tin than any we have ever seen on a toy of that type. So, chances are that it is probably not from a toy. The left wing has a small, in period, hole near the tip & the right wing has two small, in period, holes near the tip. This gives us the thought that maybe this swan would have originally had wires attaching it to something additional? The paint has considerable wear. But, the swan has lots of original silver paint present. The swan's head is pushed down somewhat and there are numerous and assorted bends on other parts of the swan. But there are no breaks and no repairs. There is one small hole underneath which gives us the feeling that the swan probably once had feet. There is a screw and a nut underneath that indicate the swan was once attached to something with a roundish shape. The weight is 7.2 ounces. The size is 7 5/8 inches long by 5 inches tall. The wings are 5 7/8 inches ling & the size across the wing tips from left to right is 3 7/16 inches. Quite an interesting, appealing, & nicely detailed item. But, as you can see this swan has us somewhat puzzled as to exactly what it is. Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value.
