Ancient Greek Bronze Coin - Medusa Design

Description: History of the ArtifactThese Greek bronze coins were minted in the ancient city of Misos along the Black Sea coast of modern day northern Turkey. Founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 6th century B.C, it was re-settled by Athenians and incorporated into the Kingdom of Pontus in the 4th century BC. It eventually fell under Roman rule in 71 B.C. The obverse of the coin features Medusa, a famous figure from Greek mythology known as one of the Gorgons, a trio of monstrous sisters. She is typically described as a woman with snakes for hair and a gaze that could turn anyone who looked at her into stone. Medusa's face is said to be so hideous that it could petrify those who met her eyes. Medusa is often depicted as a fearsome and grotesque creature, and her ability to turn people to stone made her a symbol of terror in Greek mythology. She met her end when the hero Perseus beheaded her with the help of divine gifts, including a mirrored shield, which allowed him to avoid her gaze. Medusa's severed head remained potent, and it played a role in other mythological events, such as helping to defeat the sea monster Cetus and later being used as a weapon. On the revers, the goddess Nike is depicted holding a wreath and a palm branch. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory, often depicted as a winged figure symbolizing triumph and success.Mithridates VI oversaw the minting of these coins, which have a tetrachalkon (one-twelfth of a drachm) denomination. How do I know these are original Greek Coins?Ancient Artifacts guarantees the Authenticity of items sold through a three layer system of protection: Ancient Artifacts exclusively sources artifacts from trusted and reputable antique distributors, many of whom have been selling Artifacts for decades.
