Dated 1859, the bark PETER DEMILL left New York for Savannah Georgia with cargo eventually carried by rail to Macon, Georgia. The PETER DEMILL was purchased by the Union Navy in 1861 along with other aging ships which were loaded up with dirt, rock and sand, towed south and sunk in strategic spots along the coast. The PETER DEMILL was sunk at Tybee Island, Georgia to act as a wharf for Union troops. Paper has some faint discoloring along the left edge but otherwise is in good condition.
