This particular vessel must have been used during ritual ceremonies, as a storage vessel of grain, for use by the departed in the afterlife. This sacred sculptural vessel, the ‘Oxen’ was regarded as the most prestigious of the sacrificial animals offered to deities and ancestor spirits in ancient China. Created as a storage container in the shape of the beast emphasizes its significant role in solemn and sacred rituals. Description: A fine example of early Chinese archaic vessels contoured in the form of a zoomorphic animal the ‘sacred oxen’, was cast standing four square and fashioned with three-lidded opening embellished with ferocious dragons coiled on each of the lids. The oxen’s head features bulging eyes, pointed ears, C-shape horns, and a ringed nose. Cast of bronze the vessel was formed with rather thin walls and hollow legs, and decorated in crisply carved Taotie Mask molded in relief throughout. The vessel is an early style Shang and Han Dynasty type, created as a ceremonial object of which to honor their ancestors and to provide a similar environment during the afterlife as the deceased were accustom to. xxxx A relatively heavy piece primarily cast of bronze, with the surface covered with a fine chocolate brown patina, with patches of natural malachite and verdigris encrustation. xxxxThe vessel is in excellent condition, except for a few pits from casting flaws.
