Description: Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Craven aged 12 - 1836. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower bowl flanked by a carnation bowl, all underlined with a strawberry border. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following biblical quotation finishing with Mary's details and the date of June 18th 1836, all underlined with a floral border And the Lord God said unto the serpent Because thou has done thisThou art cursed above all cattle and above every beast of the fieldUpon thy belly shalt thou go and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy lifeAnd I will put enmity between thee and the womanAnd between thy seed and her seedIt shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heelUnto the woman he said I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conceptionIn sorrow thou shalt bring forth childrenAnd thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over theeMary Craven Work Ended June 18th in the Year of Our Lord 1836 Aged 12 The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches, both with a large floral urn beside them. The fruits of the Tree have a star and bird to their left and right, then the whole piece is surrounded by a delightful double strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a patch of staining next to both Adam and Eve and across the bottom edge strawberry border. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also minor bleeding to the stitch work of Mary's details etc. The sampler is contained within an early 20th century Hogarth style frame which is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a few small old losses to the outer gilt detailing. PLEASE NOTE:- This is a fairly large piece measuring 17 3/4" x 20 3/4" (sight size) and 19 3/4" x 23" including the frame. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
