Federal Cartridge Box Plate – Brook Station, Virginia – Civil War – 5065

Description: A Federal issue cartridge box plate excavated near “Brooke Station” in Stafford County, Virginia. The area around the Railroad Station was occupied by the Federal 11th Corp during the winter of 1862 – 1863. The plate follows the Federal Regulation of 1839, and was used as ornamentation on the flap of a cartridge box. It was discontinued with the 1864 regulation in favor of the stamped U.S. on the leather itself. The plates were made from the late 1850’s through 1864. The artifact was found by Terri Heilman and has his original tag. Stafford County, Virginia is located across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg. The Federal “Army of the Potomac” under both Generals Burnside and Hooker camped there during the winter of 1862 - 63. It was from these camps that the army crossed the river in December of 1862 to fight at the Battle of Fredericksburg under General Burnside. After the defeat at Fredericksburg they returned to camp for the rest of the winter under General Hooker. Terry Heilman was a long time relic hunter here in Stafford County, Virginia. Terry hunted many of the sites here in Stafford County, the Confederate 1862 Occoquan Defense Line and other sites over the years. Like my father and I he cataloged all of his finds in groups or a lot of them with individual tags as to where it was recovered. The plate comes as shown in 5” x 6” Riker style case with original tag. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
