Description: France 1850: A Mother and Child in the Woods, Excellent Study by Fortune Ferogio (1805-1888) From the hand of a gifted 19th century artist comes this small, delicately executed study, done in pencil with colored gouache highlights, of a mother and daughter in the woods . The immediate provenance is a recent fine arts auction in Paris. Our artist is an interesting Provençal master, François-Fortuné Ferogio (Marseille 1805-Paris 1888), whose biography in the authoritative Bénézit "Dictionnaire" is appended as the last photo. We see, in a forest setting, the small figures of a mother and her daughter, their dresses perhaps indicating a Provençal peasant or gypsy origin. This is very nice and evocative work from the mid-nineteenth century. Dimensions are about 4.75 inches by 3.75 inches. An old mat brings this out to about 7 inches by 6 inches. The artist has signed, lower left, "Ferogio." Condition of the drawing is very good. The mat has a little ding on the right side but is still serviceable. I see a somewhat larger drawing by this artist selling at a French auction in 2016 for about $800; another went in 2011 for about $600. This one, of very good quality, is much more moderately priced. Shipping within the U.S. will be $10. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
