AVERY Maker Marked Cast Steel Broad/Pioneer Axe Click images to enlarge Description Up for Auction is a Scarce Large 18th Century Revolutionary War Era J.S. AVERY Maker Marked Cast Steel Broad/Pioneer Axe! 1750's-1800 Rare Antique 18th century maker's marked broad Axe. Blade has one flat side and a beveled cutting edge on the other. The Axe handle is so slightly curved you may consider it straight (see photos). Hard to get a good photo, but the maker's mark reads: J.S. AVERY – WESTFIELD - CAST STEEL This is a large and heavy broad Axe measuring 9.0" at the cutting edge and about 9.0" wide. Total length with handle is 22.5". Very good condition for it's 260 year age. The Axe head has some pitting and signs of actual use, but also a great dark patina. Original 18th century handle in good condition (head end) and at the end of the handle on both sides (see last photo) but is still securely attached to the head with just the faintest hint of wobbling. This is a wicked looking broad Axe, great for decorating a barn or hunting cabin and a neat conversation piece. Came out of an Important Antique Axe Collection from a former Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts. RARE PIECE!
