Description: Available in this listing is an exceptional agatized petrified wood cut specimen with a lacquer seal, display face finish originating from the Owyhee Mountains in Oregon from the Vale Wood Deposit! This particular specimen has exceptional exterior preservation of a fossil wood preserved in highly stable opal! The coloration of the specimen is that of high contrast areas of black on tan and white. This specimen shows no reds or pinks but is clearly from the same deposit as other specimens of Vale Wood I have offered previously. The preservation of the original organic wood's growth structure is perfectly detailed via opal and agate mineralization allowing the viewer to get an excellent view of the ring segments. The color of the agatized wood is quite pleasing in black, grey, white and tan. This specimen clearly exhibits cellular replacement by mineralization as evidenced in the magnified photographs. I have only known two or three individuals in my life who had hunted and dug this wood and met all of them long after they were physically able to venture out to the location and definitely unable to adequately describe exactly where it was (or maybe still is?)! As of today, the old-time diggers I have known have all passed away and not one of my associates, even those in their ninth decade of life, is privy to the deposit's location! I do know that it originated in a large fossil producing area of the Owyhee High Desert somewhere between Adrian, Oregon going out towards Grassy Mountain and HooDoo Basin and continuing towards Vale, Oregon. I have hunted the land personally for over a decade and have yet to find any evidence of old digs or the location-defining matrix of red sand. The unique display specimen has a lacquer clear coat finish that could be polished as it has sealed the face of the specimen or could be displayed as is! The display piece measures 130mm by 76mm by 117mm. The fossil wood weighs exactly 2 pounds 12.4 ounces. All photographs taken while the petrified Vale Wood was dry. I will combine shipping for multiple purchases as long as the specimens can be packaged in a manner that minimizes the potential for damage.
