ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is a Beautiful & Very Rare Antique Circa 1920’s B&W Original Real-Photo ‘Buckingham Print’ (Gelatin Silver) of the U.S. Historic & Famous Scene titled the, “Embarkation of the Pilgrims, At Delft Haven, Holland, July 22nd 1620.”, as appears titled & printed on the separate ‘KEY’ info sheet listing all the key people depicted in the image (see image of KEY below), and was photographed directly from the original famous 1843 painting by the well known Hudson River School painter & educator ‘Robert Walter Weir’ (American, 1803-1889), whose printed signature appears lower left in the image area, and whose painting hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. The ‘KEY’ also lists the inventory number for the photo print as ‘#1769’, which was written in pencil upper right. We have other antique historical C.O. Buckingham Co. Prints listed as well as scenes of Washington, DC, so please have a look! ‘Published & Copyrighted by The C.O. Buckingham Co., 810 - 13th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.’, as appears stamped on the back of the piece, and the publisher’s copyright & name is also embossed lower left on the front of the piece, ‘© C.O. Buckingham’. This scene was part of the series of photographic images Buckingham did from famous historical paintings hanging in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, though I don’t know the title of the series, and could typically be purchased through the C.O. Buckingham Co. Photographic Art Shop (Photography & custom framing shop) as well as other stores in the area. The name is for the noted Washington photographer & publisher Clinton Oscar Buckingham (American, 1875-1950), and all their images were directly from the company’s original glass-plate negatives. “The Pilgrims appear on the deck of the ship Speedwell as they depart Delfshaven in South Holland on July 22, 1620. William Brewster, holding the Bible, and pastor John Robinson lead Governor Carver, William Bradford, Miles Standish, and their families in prayer. The rainbow, at the left side of the painting, symbolizes hope and divine protection.” (From: Wikipedia) The Photo itself is on a typical antique wove ivory-colored photo paper stock, with smooth front and is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with normal light silvering in the darker/shadow areas of the image. The Photo size with small margins is 7” x 9-3/4”, Image size is 5-5/16” x 8-1/2”. No tears. Extremely minimal (only a handful, if that) of very tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are hardly noticeable (tough to see) and aren’t even really worth mentioning. No other damage at all in image area. Extremely minimal & slight outer margin corner wear with some tiny dog-ear creases and some associated rounding in only a few of the outer margin corners, as well as extremely minimal & slight outer edge wear with some dents & dings here & there—all of which are completely negligible and also not worth mentioning since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Some normal toning of the photo paper stock from age, as well as very slight curling of the photo paper at the outer margin edges which is also negligible and easily matted out. This beautiful antique original photograph would make a wonderful addition to any U.S. historical or art collection and has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
