Description: Vintage Swiss Army Rucksack Mountain Pack Green Salt and Pepper Canvas Leather. This large, vintage 1950s Swiss Army Mountain Pack is a unique and historical military rucksack/backpack. The bag features green canvas made from nettle and flax developed by the Swiss during WWII and thick full-grain leather. Stinging nettle is a high-performance fiber, and flax provides waterproofing and suppleness, which results in the speckled "salt and pepper" appearance of the canvas. The rucksack features a front compartment with a double buckle strap closure and a large, roomy interior with a drawstring and another double buckle strap closure. It is perfect for those looking for a durable and functional piece of history that can hold a lot of essentials! The leather is stamped with the leatherworkers name (it is difficult to read), the number "58", which is the year it was made, and "Stalden Vs", which reflects that it was made in the town of Stalden in the Swiss canton of Valais. The rucksack is clean and in good condition for its age. The canvas is sturdy and more green than in the pictures. The leather has been conditioned. I think it originally had a leather strap on the back, which at some point was replaced with a nylon strap. There are a few small holes in the canvas that I repaired with fabric glue but could be repaired with needle and thread; see the last two pictures. Measures approximately 17" wide at the top, 14" wide at the bottom, 21" high, and "3-1/2 deep.
